DO YOU HAVE A CITY NAMED AFTER YOU?!

In this video, we visit the beautiful, colonial city of Mariana. The city is famous for having some of the most well-preserved colonial architecture from the 18th century. We started our visit at the main square of the city called Praça Minas Gerais where you find 2 churches, a building and a monument: Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Casa de Câmara e Antiga Cadeia, and Pelourinho. We start with visiting the Igreja de São Francisco de Assis which is once again another one of Aleijadinho's designs and has some of the typical characteristics of his designs. Then we continued by visiting the church called Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo. This place caught fire and was closed for a few years while the restoration work was being done, but is now once again open to the public. Next stop was the building called Casa de Câmara e Antiga Cadeia where there used to be a jail on the first floor and city hall or municipality on the second floor. Right now the second floor is still used by law makers and the first floor is used to administrative purposes and to serve the public. In the middle of this square the is a monument called Pelourinho which has a sword on one hand and a scale on the other hand and on the top there is a crown which would be the representative of the Portuguese crown at the time. This is unfortunately where the slaves would be punished if they had not obeyed the rules! After Praça Minas Gerias, we visited another one of Mariana's squares called Praça Gomes Freire. This square is surrounded by gorgeous, colourful buildings from the colonial era. Walking through the streets of Mariana we next arrived at another famous square in Mariana called Praça da Sé which is located right in front of another church called Igreja da Sé or Catedral Basílica Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Right next to this church you will find the second oldest street in Mariana called Rua Direita which once again is not short of colonial style buildings and is covered by cobblestones. Our last stop of the day was a church on top of a hill with a very nice view of the city. The church is called Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos and has a unique design with the use of a stone that has a touch of orange colour. We hope you enjoy the video :)
