Ryan Borgwardt, a married father of two, went missing on August 12 while kayaking at Green Lake in Wisconsin, but officials now believe he faked his own death and fled to Europe . An extensive eight-week search of the lake yielded no signs of Borgwardt's body, but investigators later discovered that his passport had been flagged by Canadian authorities the day after his disappearance. This revelation led to a digital forensic analysis of Borgwardt's laptop, which revealed that he had replaced the hard drive, cleared his browser, and taken photos of his passport before disappearing. Additionally, Borgwardt had taken out a $375,000 life insurance policy in January and was believed to be communicating with a woman from Uzbekistan. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are now assisting in the investigation, with authorities seeking to identify any potential accomplices and pursue compensation for the costly search efforts
