Paris prosecutors have requested a two-year prison sentence and five-year ineligibility for Marine Le Pen, accusing her of embezzling European Parliament funds.

The National Rally party and 25 of its officials are alleged to have misused EU funds intended for parliamentary aides between 2004 and 2016 to pay party staff.

Prosecutors seek a €300,000 fine and additional penalties for Le Pen and other co-defendants.

The nine-week trial concludes on November 27, with a verdict expected later.

Le Pen, who has denied the charges, argues the aides’ work was related to political tasks and insists the allegations are politically motivated, the Associated Press has reported.
