Full Metal Jacket is a War Film released on June 26 1987. It’s directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick who’s known for such films as The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove and Spartacus. Filming for Full Metal Jacket took roughly a year partly due to the fact that Kubrick was a notorious perfectionist and would do dozens of takes for every scene. The movie was filmed in various locations in England including London, Cambridgeshire, Newham and the Isle of Dogs. It was adapted from the 1979 novel The Short-Timers by Gustav Hasford a Vietnam vet who also contributed to the screenplay. the strong cast in this film includes Matthew Modine, Arliss Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio ( who gained 70 pounds for his role), Adam Baldwin, Dorian Harewood, Tim Colceri ( who actually served in Vietnam), and R. Lee Ermey who was an actual U.S. Marines drill instructor during the Vietnam War. Ermey improvised the majority of his dialogue in the movie thanks to his military experience with Kubrick adding everything into the screenplay. During filming all the actors playing recruits underwent Marine Corps training with Ermey yelling at them for 10 hours a day. Full Metal Jacket is also a heavily quoted movie thanks to the savage insults, funny one liners and words of wisdom. Arguably it’s the greatest and most realistic war movie ever made. Kubrick even said he wasn’t making an anti war film but he wanted to show what war is like.
