At its core, a rocker box is a wooden frame with a sloped bottom lined with riffles and carpets. Gold-bearing material is fed into the cradle and mixed with water. The cradle is a box with two metal sieves, and it is used to mine alluvial, or surface gold. One person shoveled dirt into the cradle, another poured in water, and a third rocked the cradle from side to side, sieving mud down through the levels. Today, the rocker box is not used as extensively as the sluice, but still is an effective method of recovering gold in areas where there is not enough available water to operate a sluice effectively.
