5. Introduction to Marina Tsvetaeva

A prolonged survey of English translations of the Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva. I think most of the readings worked out well... perhaps the last couple were a bit weak... but hey this should be a useful introduction to Tsvetaeva, particularly to someone not familiar with Russian poetry, or someone not specifically familiar with Tsvetaeva. Although I bigged up the Naydan/Yastremsky versions of 'After Russia' lamenting that there was no new edition (to my knowledge) it's worth noting that a smaller number of their translations of this book are available in 'The Essential Poetry'. The Feinstein translations that were left out are available on a search through Penguin Books, or in Feinstein's own 'Collected Poems and Translations' (Carcanet). For biography/memoir and critical prose I'd recommend Viktoria Schweitzer's 'Tsvetaeva', Ariadna Efron's 'No Love Without Poetry' and Simon Karlinsky's 'Marina Tsvetaeva: The Woman, her World, and her Poetry'
