Dexys Midnight Runners musician Andy Leek has passed away at 66 after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease, a struggle he faced since his diagnosis at age 49 in 2008. Andy was a founding member of the iconic 1980s band, best known for his role as pianist on their number one hit, Geno. Following his time with the band, he went on to have a successful solo career, releasing several albums including Waking Up the World.

His partner of 35 years, Deborah Smith Lawrence, shared the news in a heartfelt tribute, describing him as “a phenomenal person,” and recalling their recent wedding on October 30. Although the couple had not planned to marry, they decided to tie the knot just days before his passing. Deborah remembered him as courageous, creative, and deeply loved by those around him, sharing how he poured himself into his music in response to his diagnosis.

Throughout his career, Andy collaborated with Sir George Martin, often known as the “fifth Beatle,” and penned Twist in the Dark for ABBA’s Anni-Frid Lyngstad. He also made appearances on popular TV shows like Later with Jools Holland, Children in Need, and Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Deborah concluded her tribute by expressing her gratitude for his enduring legacy, celebrating his powerful impact on those who knew him and his lasting influence on the music world.
