Is Kaico Labs' OSSC 1.8 The Best Way To Play PS2 Games?

In this video, I unbox and demonstrate the Open Source Scan Converter (OSSC) 1.8 provided by Kaico Labs. I specifically use a PlayStation 2 (PS2) because most of its games use 480i (NTSC) with a few exceptions.

The OSSC is a versatile and highly regarded open-source hardware device designed primarily for retro gaming enthusiasts and collectors. It is a tool that allows users to enhance the video quality of classic game consoles by upscaling and converting their analogue video signals into a digital format compatible with modern high-definition displays. The 1.8 Revision runs the new 1.xx branch firmware which includes improved sync handling and stability, new HDR mode, 6X output mode (with pixel repetition) and shadow mask emulation/post processing filters. As with revision 1.7, a professional, injection moulded case and over-voltage protection is also included.

The OSSC is primarily used to bridge the gap between older video game consoles, such as the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and even arcade systems, and modern high-definition (HD) or even 4K displays. It accomplishes this by taking analogue video signals and converting them into digital signals that can be displayed on modern screens without the blurriness and artifacts that often plague these older consoles.

The OSSC is known for its broad compatibility with a wide range of input sources, including SCART, component, and VGA. It can handle signals from numerous game consoles, including those from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, as well as arcade boards and even certain older computers. The OSSC v1.7 Line double supports resolutions of 240p, 288p, 384p, 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i & 1080p.

OSSC is opened sourced, so many companies make it. This is the one that links to the main wiki: https://videogameperfection.com/products/open-source-scan-converter/
