A senior advisor to Donald Trump has said Ukraine needs to be "realistic" in its aims for the war, as per reports. Speaking to the BBC, Republican party strategist Bryan Lanza said that the Russian-occupied peninsula of Crimea was "gone."
Lanza said Trump will focus on achieving peace in Ukraine rather than enabling the country to gain back territory occupied by Russia. Lanza added Ukraine would be "on your own" if the goal was "having American soldiers fight to get Crimea back.”
Russia invaded and then annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 which Kyiv has publicly said it will retake. During the interview, Lanza did not refer to Ukraine’s Donbas region, but said retaking Crimea from Russia was “unrealistic” and "not the goal of the US." The Trump administration would ask Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to present a "realistic vision for peace", according to Lanza. He praised the Ukrainian people, whose "hearts are made of lions," but added that Washington’s priority was "peace and to stop the killing."
