The Common Redstart is a lovely little bird that visits Britain in summer. About the size of a robin, the male is quite eye-catching with his bright orange breast and tail, grey back, and black face with a white forehead. Females are more plain, mostly brown with a pale orange tail. These birds love old woodlands and gardens where they can find plenty of insects to eat. They're quite clever at catching their food - they'll sit on a branch, spot an insect, then swoop down to grab it. During winter, they head off to Africa where it's warmer. Sadly, there aren't as many Redstarts as there used to be in Britain, partly because we've lost lots of old woodland areas where they like to nest. They're quite special birds because they often return to the exact same nesting spot year after year, usually in holes in old trees or walls.
