Jesus' 'Battle' against the Myth-Culture – Mark 10:46–52

In this brief excerpt from the course, Jesus and Myth, Dr. Barber discusses the ‘battle’ that Jesus Christ models for us. It is not the battle of myth, of myth-culture, but the opposite of that. Myth’s battle is to strive against our Creator God, against His will and purpose for us, and against one another for personal benefit at their expense (scapegoating others).

Instead, in imitation of Paul, as he imitates Christ, the Christian is expected to walk deliberately toward self-sacrifice and death, toward the Cross, with unwavering faith that God will save him/her. This is the Christian’s ‘battle,’ a battle against unbelief, and against self-interest, against the old-man of the flesh to which we died when we first believed in Jesus.

Only Holy Spirit's power at work in and through us can fight this battle for us. Are you yielding to Holy Spirit as He draws you into Jesus' pattern, deferring to the Father's will, the Way of the Cross? Or do you follow myth's pattern, striving to ensnare others, seeking to crucify others, for your own gain?
