A 46-year-old woman, Rhonda Charmane Jewell, has been arrested after a 10-month-old girl tragically died in a hot car in Baker County, Florida. The infant's mother found her daughter unresponsive inside the car around 1:30 PM, after the babysitter had left the child in the vehicle for hours.
According to the Baker County Sheriff's Office, Jewell, a Sanderson resident, picked up the baby from the mother's home at 8:00 AM. She then drove to another location where she was watching three other children. The babysitter reportedly assumed the baby was asleep in the car and forgot about her while interacting with the other kids inside. The outside temperature that day was at least 98°F, but the temperature inside the car had reached a dangerous 133°F.
When the mother discovered the baby, she immediately removed her from the car and called authorities. Deputies attempted life-saving measures before the baby was rushed to the hospital, but she was declared deceased. The child's internal temperature was recorded at 110°F—higher than the thermometer could measure.
Rhonda Jewell has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child in connection with this devastating incident.
