Wat Amphawan - Ayutthaya Era Temple - Bangyai Nonthaburi Provence - Thailand 2024
Wat Amphawan - Bangyai Nonthaburi
This small temple is built at the end of Bangkok Noi Canal in Nonthaburi province, on the other side of the river from Bangkok. It’s relatively unknown but has a lot of historic value for the locals.
It is believed that King Prasartthong (26th King of Ayutthaya Era) ordered the people to dig a short cut canal from Wat Taimuang to Bangkruay canal (Kemapiradaram Temple). During the digging of this canal there was a plague in Ayutthaya that forced the king to relocate people to this area to be safe from the disease that was affecting people in the city.
The settlers decided upon this area and built this temple. The temple was originally named after the location as "Bangmuang Temple" and later changed to its current name of "Amphawan Temple"
The Buddhist script hall, Amphawan Temple
The Buddhist script hall which is surrounded by water, is a wooden building that was built during late Ayutthaya era. It has two stories: two rooms on the second floor and one broad room on the ground floor.
The floor is raised higher than the balcony and the entrance wooden door is decorated in rice funnel shapes and covered with gold-leave and black lacquer. The hall was restored by Department of Fine Arts in 2004.
Stupa, Amphawan Temple
The stupa was built with the same architectural style as in the Ayutthaya era. It is located at the east side of the Mandapa, near the Bangkok Noi canal and the Bangmuang canal. The base of the stupa is 8 sided and has three levels. There are stairways on all four sides. The exterior from the bottom to the top is covered with white plaster and pieces of ceramics bowls and plates (terracotta). It is also decorated with Buddhist style elements and has a script at the base stated the full name of the stupa, "Phrabuddhakongtham Stupa with a construction date of 1932.
The temple is near a few others in the area. It’s not something you should seek out unless you enjoy these hidden temples in Thailand.
