Analyzing PCU (1994) | Deconstructing Political Correctness | The DEI Psyop

Tonight will be more lighthearted but still covering a serious topic…I’d like to use a great comedy from 1994, celebrating it’s 30 year anniversary if you are paying attention there…”PCU” starring Jeremy Piven, Jon Favreau, David Spade, Jessica Walters and many 90’s comedy character actors, lots of whom are still very active but were just beginning their careers. It’s an interesting film for lots of reasons. I’m not going to pretend it’s super high-brow or intellectual because it’s absolutely not. Perhaps it is the same way that Idiocracy is…but I will say though that it’s mostly absent of dumb humor like fart jokes because this film is not a ‘gross-out’ comedy. And even though the film centers around ‘a party’…it’s not really a party drinking comedy even though that’s exactly what it is on the surface…what it does brilliantly, just under the surface, is summarize the state of Political Correctness in the 90’s…when people were ‘just starting’ to get scared to say the wrong thing…due to what today they call ‘getting cancelled’ or “Cancel Culture”…this film attempted to humorously put an end to that nonsense but sadly very few saw it when it came out. I’d like to give it a reboot tonight with commentary. It’s quite funny and despite the ‘frat look’…is mostly a humorous look at ridiculous PC culture on college campuses…since it’s from 1994, it functions a bit like a time capsule that can be compared to today.

In 1994…we had all just been used to 2 decades of being in the party excesses of Disco 70s & Yuppie 80s…wait…now we suddenly have to watch every damn word that comes out of our mouths? Many of us…most of us wound up being the PC patrol’s controlled wimps…even if we said things freely back and forth knowing that we weren’t trying to hurt anyone or even be an IST or ISM…suddenly the paranoia, mostly driven by MSM influence…started to stretch across the country. Our culture became obsessed with holding the rules of PC or violating them flagrantly with reckless abandon…whatever the case…it became ‘a thing’.

I’d like to unwind some of the fairness of that tonight…because I know it’s roots and I know how it get’s us absolutely nowhere. People being afraid to express themselves…or more pointedly, a culture that demands the population feel intensely reserved and self-reviewing for fear of saying the exact wrong thing…this is a far worse world to be trapped in than ‘reckless abandon of words’…which I’m fine with.

Does that mean I like Hate Speech or endorse it?…no…but what is that?…now we are getting into the PC police territory which is why it’s dangerous to even go down the road of calling it ‘that’…as we’ve been seeing in recent news reports. Some people will call criticizing their hair “hate speech”…some people claim a race or religion that they aren’t even that…then claim to be offended by things said about people they aren’t…where does it stop?

I’m going to show you some scenes from Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino” which is a more recent example of what I’m talking about. People are complicated…I used to find his character abrasive but defendable…a likable guy if a bit ‘old-school’ and maybe what you’d call ‘bigoted’…but was he? Watch the film sometime in its entirety to understand what I’m talking about.

I’d also like to share some of my experiences working with a corporate DEI team before there was a movement for such a thing. I used to be on a “Diversity Council” for about 3 years at a company I worked for a long time. I thought, as a mostly liberal guy at the time who had a father whose bread and butter was HR & EEO & ‘Diversity’…for me, in my mind, I was following a legacy that was positive…until I arrived at the council. That was my first hint that this wasn’t doing what it intended…no matter how good the intentions were of most involved…some other architects are lurking in the background using all of us to create the opposite results. This is difficult to explain to someone who hasn’t learned for themselves…I was ‘all about this’…I thought it was good…I learned it was often ‘well intentioned’…but that doesn’t make it’s effects good for the people it intends to help.
