Rahan.

The son of the ferocious ages!
Episode One Hundred and Twenty-Three.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Andre Cheret.

The Valley of Flowers.

The son of Crao was not surprised to discover the bones of countless "Four-Legs" and "Two-Tooths."
He knew that these had been thrown from the top of this cliff, following a hunting tactic that he had always disapproved of.
"Those-who-walk-upright" are insane to massacre game like this!

He was climbing the cliff when.
The Spy from the Flower Clan has Violated Our Territory!
Kill Him! Kill Him!

Rocks and crude axes narrowly missed him as he clung to the ledge.
Chtok! Schlang!

He saw the hunters, dejected and shouting, returning to their village, which he could see in the distance.
A spy of the clan of flowers?
What did they mean?!

Page Two.

Oh! Rahan understands! Those below thought he came from this territory!
A narrow valley opened up before him, green and carpeted with flowers.

Clear streams meandered here and there, and pleasant scents filled the groves.
The Valley of Flowers!
Rahan has never discovered such a beautiful territory!

And he understands that they know happiness there!
In the shade of a flowering thicket, near a spring, a young couple were conversing tenderly.

Alas, my clan will never get along with yours, Hark-ha! I can never become your mate!
Attention! Ainou!

Seeing the son of the fierce ages, the young hunter jumped up with his lance.
Do not come near, "Fire-Hair"! What do you want from us? What clan are you from?
I am Rahan! The son of Crao!

And Rahan is the friend of all clans! You have nothing to fear from him!
But why are you so sad! And yourselves? Who are you?

Page Three.

I am Hark-Ha, the son of Bor-Ka, the leader of the "People Below!" Ainou is the daughter of the leader of the "People of Flowers." But our clans have always hated each other!
Because mine.

They live only from hunting and despise those in this valley who live only from plants and fruits!

Ainou and I love each other!
But if my people caught me with her, they would kill me! It is high time that I go back down to the village!

Rahan wishes he could help Ainou and Hark-ha!
You cannot do anything for us "Fire-Hair"! Nothing!
But, do you want to meet my clan?

I will see you soon Ainou!
As will I, Hark-ha!
I will come back here at the "pointed moon." I hope to see you then!
As her companion disappeared, a tear welled in the girl's eyes.

The flower people lived in the hollow of this marvelous valley. The son of Crao was warmly welcomed there.
My daughter was right to bring you to us, "Fire-Hair"! All those who pass through this valley are our brothers!

Page Four.

Yes, all are our brothers, Except those cursed murderers below!
But what do you reproach "Those below" for? For being hunters?

We do not blame them for hunting, but for hunting stupidly and ransacking our beautiful and generous valley! When they track down a herd of "Four legs," or a flock of "Two teeth."

They push them into our valley to force the animals to rush towards the cliff.
And these herds destroy everything in their path.
Our huts, like the trees that give us. Their fruits from which we live!

"Those below" are stupid! Not only are they devastating your valley.
But they are uselessly massacring the game they will one day need!

Rahan will convince "Those Below" That there are other ways to hunt!
Do not believe it, "Fire-Hair"!
Hor-Ka is the most understanding clan leader I know!

Nothing would have dissuaded the son of Crao from his plan.
That was why, the next day.

"The Flower People's Spy" is coming to our territory! This time, he will not escape us!

Page Five.

The breeze brought Rahan the sound of a slight rustling.
So he was hardly surprised by the attack.
And the two men made the mistake of throwing their axes.

Because they had to fight hand to hand.
Smack! Argh!
A bare-handed confrontation where the son of Crao excelled!

Ra-ha-ha! Ogh!

You are poor hunters!
You should know that to surprise a prey you must always lie in ambush against the wind!

And now you are going to take Rahan to your chief!
These men were too impressed, and also too puny, to attempt to escape the iron grip of the son of Crao!

"Those Below" were astonished when he appeared with his "prisoners."
Rahan came as a friend Bor-Ka! And these cowards tried to steal his life!
Rahan hopes you can punish them!

Page Six.

He had just thrown the two men at Bor-Ka's feet when Hark-Ha, the Chief's son, threw himself on him to attack him. But this was only a feint.

To whisper something to him.
Do not say you saw me with Ainou, brother! No! Father would never forgive me!
Rahan will not betray you, Har-Ka!

Rahan came to tell you that your way of hunting is bad!
Not only that, but you ravage the valley of the flower people.

But by throwing them from the top of the cliff you decimate entire herds while a few beasts would be enough to feed your clan!
You could set traps for example!

Bor-Ka had turned pale.

We have never hunted otherwise and we will continue to do so! Disarm this madman and hang him.

By the feet until his stupid ideas flee his mind.
Resisting would have resulted in death. Unarmed, wrists shackled, Rahan was hung from a branch.

Let no one approach him!
We will only release him when he recognizes that our way of hunting is the best and the only way!
Page Seven.

No one cared any more about the captive, whose every effort to free himself was in vain.
When night fell, the hunters hid in their huts!

And that was when.
The ivory knife had stuck itself in the nearby trunk.
No hunter was in sight, but the son of Crao understood.

Hark-Ha! It can only be him!
He wants to come to Rahan's aid, but without his family knowing!

It was easy to swing his body.
Cutting his bonds on the ivory blade was much less so.
But.
He succeeded!

One last swing. And he snatched his knife.
Freeing himself from the vines that bound his ankles was just a game.

Page Eight.

Shortly after, avoiding the cliff, he returned to the valley of flowers by a long, steep slope.
It is by this path that "Those below" push the herds up to the cliff!
The "Flower People" anxiously awaited his return.

Have you seen "Those Below" “Hair of fire?” Have you seen Hark-Ha?
Yes, Ainou! Hark-Ha even saved Rahan!

Rahan could not convince Bor-Ka! But if you all help Rahan, He will prove to "Those Below" that there is a less deadly way to hunt!
We will help you, Rahan!

The next day, and in the days that followed, on the advice of the son of Crao, a trench was dug at the entrance to the valley of flowers.

This trench was being completed, the branches and foliage were going to roughly camouflage it, when one morning the alarm was sounded.

Those from below are coming!
They are pushing a herd of "Two-tooths" towards the valley!

We must flee, Rahan! We must take refuge on the slopes. As is our habit.

No! Rahan will stay here! He is sure that his "Trap" is effective!

Page Nine.

The son of the fierce ages saw the mammoths coming.
Scared by the hunters' torches.

The old man who was leading the way rushed towards the trench trap.
Towards this strange carpet of branches which blocked the hollow of the valley of flowers.

Bor-Ka and his family froze in shock when.
This mammoth suddenly disappeared from their sight!

Rahan did not give the "Two-tooth" time to get up! Ra-ha-ha!

The hunters, still stunned, no longer cared about the herd, which was turning back and escaping them.

You will be happy to find them again later!
And whatever is in this trap will give you enough meat to wait for the "Season-without-leaves"!

"Those below" were approaching. They suddenly discovered that it was possible to kill.

A “Two Teeth” without sacrificing an entire herd!
I think "Fire-Hair" is right, father!
Um. I think so too Hark-Ka!

Page Ten.

I do not know by what miracle you escaped from us the other night, "Fire-Hair"!
But I bless this miracle, because you have just taught us a good and great thing.

And Rahan will teach you other traps!
By only killing the necessary game, you will preserve them for your future hunters, and also the valley of the flower people!

A little later.
Let yours share this "Two-tooth"! Now we will know how to kill another. Only one!
Let "Those Below" accept these fruits in exchange Bor-Ka!

Nothing delighted Rahan as much as this reconciliation of the two clans.

Only one thing, perhaps, gave him even more joy!
It was Ainou and Hark-Ha who, over there, exchanged tender kisses.

Ainou and Hark-Ha who would no longer have to hide their love!
Ainou and Hark-Ha who would owe their happiness to this hunter.

With hair the color of sun and fire, who was called, in those fierce times, Rahan, the son of Crao.
