Invasive Species: How Pablo Escobar's Hippos are RAVAGING Colombia (Even Today)
In the early 1980’s Pablo Escobar, the richest criminal in the world, imported four hippos to Colombia in South America, and today, this invasive species is ravaging the country.
Escobar loved animals and decided to take one of his mansions East of Medellin and create the largest private zoo on the planet. He imported animals from across the world, but his favorite was a group of hippos he smuggled in from the states
After his death, the hippos were released into the swamps surrounding his mansion, and from there they've multiplied. Today, they pose a huge problem to Colombia as they struggle to deal with this invasive species.
We'll talk about the destruction the hippos cause to the Colombian ecosystem and the many plans government officials have come up with to deal with the hippos, covering everything from hunting them to developing hippo birth control.
