The Redshank: Close Up HD Footage (Tringa totanus)

The Redshank is a wading bird you'll often spot around British coastlines and wetlands. Its bright red legs make it easy to spot - that's actually how it got its name! These medium-sized birds are about the size of a small pigeon and have greyish-brown feathers on top with speckled white underneath. When they fly, you'll notice a striking white stripe along their wings and a white rump.
These clever birds are known for being incredibly noisy, especially when something disturbs them. They make a distinct 'teu-hu' call that warns other birds of danger, which is why they're sometimes called the 'warden of the marshes'. Redshanks love to feed on all sorts of small creatures they find in the mud, like worms, crabs and tiny shellfish.
You'll find them breeding across the UK, particularly in coastal marshes and wet grasslands. In winter, even more Redshanks arrive from Iceland and northern Europe, making our mudflats and estuaries their temporary home.
