The success of the four-wheel trailing truck installed on engine 3829, paved the way for John Purcell and his team to create even larger and very powerful locomotives. The 3751 Class 4-8-4 was the first to out perform even the 3800 class 2-10-2's.

The Santa Fe Railway was having tremendous growth after WWI and John Purcell hired Charles T. Ripley and H. H. Lanning. Together the design team of Purcell, Ripley and Lanning would create the most powerful and efficient 2-cylinder steam locomotives ever created. Engine 3751, a 4-8-4 was the mother of this large new group.
