Bob Whitaker: Half Of Your Income Goes To Taxes -- But You Don't Have Time For Politics
You spend more money on the decisions you make in politics than you do on your car, on your house, on your food, pretty well on everything, clothing, anything. Now what if you spent the same amount time in buying a car that you spend deciding who to vote for???
People say, 'well, I would like to read about politics, study politics, learn about policy, but I'm busy'. It never occurs to them that the politician is in exactly the same position. You should be interested in what committee handles what in Congress and so forth, but you don't have time for that you got a life of your own, you got your own interests. Well, so does your politician.
Now, let me give you a piece of arithmetic most people don't like to think about. Approximately half on your total income, I'm talking about all excise taxes on everything, I'm not just talking about income taxes, but excise taxes, sales taxes, all these things, half of your income approximately goes to one government or another. How that money is spent is determined by politics. You spend more money on the decisions you make in politics than you do on your car, on your house, on your food, pretty well on everything, clothing, anything. Now what if you spent the same amount time in buying a car that you spend deciding who to vote for???
Now, I don't know you because that's back to this humanity business, and I'm not talking to humanity about it, I'm talking to you. But if you spend as little time on purchase of an automobile, the average person, spends as little time on the purchase of an automobile as he does on really looking into political doctrines or political ideas, or practical politics. What's the name of your congressman, what committed is he on?? That's where the real work gets done in Congress, in the state legislature. And if you were to go out and buy a car and you didn't know the brand name, you would consider yourself kind of odd, but people say well I'm busy, granted that my children's lives depend on politics, I'm spending half of my income on it, but I got other things to do.
And for the average person that's plenty. Then they expect this class called politicians to do all that work for them. Well, let me break it to you gang, its a terrrible thing to know, but those politicians are just people too. So what that politician is doing that you consider such an awful thing, ignoring you and paying attention to the people who are going to determine whether he's going to be re-elected or not, is exactly what you do. Democracy is a system of government where people get what they deserve.
Nobody is going to do anything for you if they know your vote is already determined. If you give away your vote, then you're going to get nothing for it.
