Reef shark swims close to check out snorkelers at resort
Brent and his wife recently visited Grand Cayman Island which is part of the British West Indies. Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. The capital city Georgetown is also a major cruise-ship port and site of the ruins of colonial-era Fort George. Beaches and vibrant coral reefs are the island’s hallmarks. Brent stayed in the east end of the island at a resort by the name of Morritt’s Tortuga. The east end of the island is much quieter which is why they chose this resort. The resort has gorgeous white sand beaches and very calm waters for swimming and snorkelling right out front, as this area has an outer reef approximately 300 yards offshore so the larger waves are kept outside the reef. Many tropical fish can be seen while snorkelling at the resort as well as barracuda and tarpon also frequent the pier. While some of these fish are thought by most to be dangerous, these local fish seem very use to all the swimming activity at the pier and just go about their business looking for a snack. Every morning at 11 the restaurant bar feeds the fish right off the dock which brings many fish close by as well as many guests get to enjoy the frenzy of food. On the day Brent recorded this footage, there had been a couple 5 foot long caribbean reef shark swimming very near the dock as well. At times when deep sea fishing boats arrive to clean their catch, the shark come in to investigate. Apparently the sharks get use to the sounds each boat makes and can recognize it from miles away so they follow in to see if they will receive a fish treat from the captain and crew. This morning there had been no fish boats arriving, but the 2 sharks were definately interested in the pier. After a short while 2 snorkelers were noticed entering the water, and rather than alarm them by mentioning the nearby shark, Brent kept an eye on it. As you will see in the video, sharks are very curious creatures, and incredibly beautiful to watch up close. Being a scuba diver that has been around sharks in the water, he knew just how the shark would react. Watch and learn, the ocean is a beautiful place.
