The Red-necked Grebe is a rather impressive waterbird that you might spot on lakes and coastal waters across the UK, particularly during winter. These clever birds are about the size of a small duck, with distinctive grey and white feathers during the colder months. Come breeding season, they transform – sporting a lovely reddish-brown neck that gives them their name. They're brilliant swimmers and can dive underwater for nearly a minute, hunting small fish and water insects. If you're lucky enough to spot one, you'll notice they love to bob about on the water like a cork. They build floating nests among reeds and water plants, where both parents take turns looking after their eggs. Interestingly, they often carry their chicks on their backs for the first few weeks – rather like giving them piggybacks! While they're not the most common sight in British waters, they're fascinating birds that add a touch of elegance to our wetlands.
