"It's beautiful, isn't it?" "What is?" "The day." Mubi has revealed their trailer for an indie film called Bird, the latest feature written and directed by the award-winning filmmaker Andrea Arnold (of Red Road, Fish Tank, American Honey, Cow). It premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition this year, but didn't take home any awards. Reviews were mixed but fairly positive. Bailey lives with her brother Hunter and her father Bug, who raises them alone in a squat in northern Kent. Bug doesn't have much time to devote to them. So Bailey looks for attention and adventure elsewhere, eventually meeting a strange man named "Bird" with whom she builds a connection with. A tender, striking, distinctly surprising coming-of-age fable from Academy Award-winner Andrea Arnold, starring Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski, and newcomer Nykiya Adams as Bailey. Arriving in theaters in the US, Canada, UK & Ireland from November 8th this fall - and streaming eventually on Mubi. Another completely fresh & original lovely cinema creation.
Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Andrea Arnold's film Bird, direct from Mubi's YouTube:

The Bird trailer previews Barry Keoghan's first movie since Saltburn became a huge streaming success. Written and directed by Andrea Arnold, who won an Academy Award for her 2005 short Wasp, her new film follows a 12-year-old girl who, living in a dilapidated building in North Kent with her neglectful father, begins looking for attention and excitement outside her home. The movie stars Barry Keoghan in a supporting role alongside Franz Rogowski, Nykiya Adams, Jason Buda, Frankie Box, Jasmine Jobson, Joanne Matthews, James Nelson-Joyce, and Sarah Beth Harber.
Now, MUBI has released the first official trailer for Bird. Watch it below:
The trailer centers on a 12-year-old girl, Bailey (played by newcomer Nykiya Adams), who lives in a dilapidated building in North Kent, England with her derelict dad Bug, played by Barry Keoghan. Seeking attention and adventure outside her home, Bailey befriends Bird (Franz Rogowski) and begins to realize the meaning of friendship.

Back in May, Bird premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where director Andrea Arnold has found much success throughout her career with her previous films Red Road (2006), Fish Tank (2009), and American Honey (2016) all winning the festival's Jury Prize which, according to critic Dave Kehr, is "intended to recognize an original work that embodies the spirit of inquiry." Though her latest film didn't win the award, Bird reviews praise the director for capturing the essence of a coming-of-age journey in a captivating and disorienting fashion that blends fantasy and reality with compelling performances, especially from newcomer Nykiya Adams.

The Bird trailer highlights much of the acclaim for the film, with critics calling Bird "beautiful, unique, full of surprises," "luminous," empathetic," "shimmering, lovely, and emotionally generous." Critics also call Barry Keoghan a "whirlwind of exuberant, volatile energy." The actor's last film, Saltburn, became a big streaming success on Prime Video and Bird has the chance to do the same on MUBI, a streaming service that curates a collection of ambitious films, mainly international and independent, from visionary filmmakers like Andrea Arnold.
Our Take On The Bird Trailer
Barry Keoghan & Andrea Arnold Deliver Once Again
Nyika Adams as Bailey swimming in water in Bird movie still 2024
Barry Keoghan, who received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in The Banshees of Inisherin, once again showcases his youthful, quirky energy in the Bird trailer. Keoghan is more of an established name because of his roles in Marvel and DC movies, though Bird will hopefully introduce more of the uninitiated to Andrea Arnold's naturalistic approach. With strong direction and performances, Bird appears to be a heartfelt, visually stunning, and unexpectedly unique coming-of-age story.
Bird releases in theaters on November 8 and will stream on MUBI at a later date.

Barry Keoghan is showing off his script tattoos for Andrea Arnold‘s highly-anticipated “Bird.”
The “Saltburn” actor and “Banshees of Inisherin” Oscar nominee plays a character named Bug in the feature that has very little details shared as of yet. “Passages” star Franz Rogowski is cast as Bird, with Nykiya Adams, Jason Buda, Jasmine Jobson, Joanne Matthews, James Nelson-Joyce, Rhys Yates, and Sarah Beth Harber.
While plot details remain under wraps, it is known that Keoghan exited Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2” to film “Bird” instead. The feature will be premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in competition alongside Sean Baker’s “Anora,” David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds,” Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness,” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.”

“Bird” is director Arnold’s return to narrative filmmaking since her 2016 Cannes release “American Honey” starring Shia LaBeouf and Sasha Lane.
“Bird” was picked up by Cornerstone Films. Actor Rogowski told IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio in December 2023 that filming “Bird” was “quite different” from his previous experiences on sets.
“With Andrea Arnold, this [past] summer, the atmosphere was quite different from what I’ve experienced so far,” Rogowski said. “She would wait for the right moment to come, like a hunter, for hours and hours to wait for a bunch of kids to calm down until they could walk across a meadow and own the meadow and be in their own territory instead of being forced to pretend to do something naturally. And that’s her message.”
Rogowski continued, “I love to work with people that have a vision, and for me, they can be assholes as long as they take care of our project and are looking for something that unites us as cinephiles. But the worst thing that can happen is to work with someone that is just very kind and not good at directing, and then you have a good time. But the movie’s going to be horrible.”
Meanwhile, Rogowski’s “Bird” co-star Keoghan wants to similarly solely work with auteurs. Keoghan told Wonderland magazine that he hopefully will collaborate with the Safdie Brothers, Lynne Ramsay, and Barry Jenkins in the future.
“I have a list of directors that tend to knock around on these interviews and by saying their names I try to use the law of attraction [to make that happen]. But I really have [now] ticked off a lot of directors on that. You know, like Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Chloé Zhao. So, I’ve got to make a feckin’ new list, man. I really do,” Keoghan said.

Bird is familiar territory for director Andrea Arnold, often leaning too much into crowd-pleasing diegetic music sequences.
Barry Keoghan's portrayal of Bug and Nykiya Adams' performance as Bailey capture characters facing unconventional coming-of-age challenges.
Arnold's kitchen sink drama style in Bird combines with magical realism but still often feels overly familiar, lacking complexity in some of its characters.
Mention U.K. filmmaker Andrea Arnold to a film lover and there is a strong likelihood the organ notes that open Rihanna’s “We Found Love” start up in their head. I’m referring, of course, to the moment in 2016's American Honey in which Shia LaBeouf’s character dances on a Walmart counter to the track. Arnold’s latest, Bird, includes many of her patented sing-along moments. There is an unforgettable rendition of Coldplay’s “Yellow” in which Bug (Barry Keoghan) and his male friends loudly serenade a toad (yes, the amphibian. You read that right). It’s hard at times not to sense Bird leaning too much into these inherently crowd-pleasing diegetic music sequences. But Arnold is so talented at staging them that they still largely hit the spot even when employed for the umpteenth time.
Like Ronald Bronstein’s father character in the Safdie brothers’ 2009 film Daddy Longlegs, Keoghan’s young Bug is woefully ill-equipped to be a father, but possesses many endearing qualities otherwise. Frequently shirtless, his body is outfitted with an array of terrible tattoos, most notably a massive centipede that extends from his chest all the way up to his lower jaw. Fresh off his star-making performance in Saltburn, Keoghan chews the scenery in Bird, bringing a radiant charisma to a father figure that could be off-putting in other hands.

Bug’s no-nonsense daughter Bailey (newcomer Nykiya Adams) is the film’s lead and as a preteen growing up in a broken home, she must navigate traditional coming-of-age tropes including getting her first period in a male-dominated home, and less conventional ones like deciding whether to join her half-brother’s vigilante gang. Bird might’ve benefitted from zeroing in on a few of these elements and expanding on them a bit more, rather than quickly introducing new ideas only to have them disappear for the remainder of the film. The film’s second half settles in on Bailey’s mother’s boyfriend’s anger issues, and his scenes are visceral and harrowing but also overly familiar—this is a story we’ve seen before many times.
A standout sequence is Franz Rogowski’s introduction as the titular Bird, accidentally scaring Bailey with his sudden appearance in the middle of a seemingly empty field. He playfully vogues for Bailey’s camera, twirling around in a kilt for her, failing to understand she’s filming so he won’t attempt any funny business. Maybe it’s this naivety that draws Bailey to Bird, but she quickly drops the hard exterior and takes an active interest in him. Bailey is presented in her own character introduction as a fan of birds, and so these weird birdlike qualities of this stranger also named Bird, call out and pique her interest.
'Bird' Has a Dash of Magic Realism
cannes-logoImage via Cannes
One of Arnold’s strengths comes in refusing to deify her working-class subjects. These are neither the blameless saints of Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland nor the exploited subjects of a “parachute” documentary (when documentary filmmakers pop into a disadvantaged region, grab the footage and fly out). To Arnold, people are often both shitheads and worthy of love. People make mistakes and hurt those they love most. In Bird, one person not afforded this complexity is the angry boyfriend and his cartoonish rage feels out of step with the perspective granted everyone else.
Bird carries a palpable eagerness to audience please, most evident during the closing credits where rough iPhone footage of working-class Brits singing along to a popular song playing. There is no connection to the preceding narrative other than it being yet more amateur singing. After a moving climax in which the magical realism alluded to up until that point takes center stage, ending on this false note of non-actors singing is unfortunate.
Bird is the type of kitchen sink British drama Arnold previously mastered in films like 2009's Fish Tank, but since moved away from in recent years. Her last few features and TV series directing gigs were all U.S.-based. Bird ultimately reads as Arnold “playing the hits” with a narrative she fundamentally knows how to stage in her sleep. Ultimately it feels too familiar, even with the welcome magical realism additions and a hallucinogenic slime secreting toad. Arnold fans will no doubt find plenty to latch onto with Bird, but it’s unlikely to convert non-believers.

REVIEW
Andrea Arnold's Bird has plenty of welcome additions to her playbook, but there is still much here that feels too familiar.
Pros
Keoghan chews the scenery, bring a radiant charisma that complicates his father figure character.
The standout scene introducing Rogowski's titular bird and other moments shine bright.
When it dives all the way into magical realism, what's old feels new again.
Cons
There is still much to the film that is too much like Arnold's previous films.
The shift back to singing after an audacious moment elsewhere undercuts its impact.
Bird had its World Premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
