Saugatuck, MI - Summer 1959
Film shot on Dual 8 at a car enthusiast group's beach party in 1959. The Furrin Group is still around, celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2024. The photographer was a member and lived in West Michigan. He was the first certified Volkswagen mechanic in Grand Rapids, but later went into finance. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 93.
This was captured using the Wolverine Digital to Film scanner. I used DaVinci Resolve to first color-correct the image and the tighten up the frame since the Wolverine produces very jittery captures. I took that output and stabilized it to remove the camera's wandering gate weave and the shaky hand-held footage. Although I'm not a fan of the Wolverine's overly aggressive compression, it's passable for casual viewing. It wouldn't be a solution for films worthy of archiving.
