optical illusion that creates the appearance of motion from a series of still images. A zoetrope is a cylindrical device with slits along its sides and sequential images inside. When the cylinder spins and the viewer looks through the slits, the images appear to animate due to the persistence of vision, where the brain blends the individual frames into continuous motion. This effect is an early precursor to modern animation and film.
