Comfort Eagle is the fourth studio album released on July 24, 2001, on Columbia Records, their first with the company.

In its opening week, Comfort Eagle sold about 72,000 copies, debuting at number 13 on the Billboard 200. By 2002, the album had sold 408,000 copies. On February 2, 2003, it was certified gold by the RIAA for shipments of half a million copies.

The album's lead single was "Short Skirt/Long Jacket." The band asked fans to vote for the album's second single via their website, with the album's title track "Comfort Eagle" being the eventual winner, however this single release was cancelled after the September 11 attacks. The band wrote: "Due to unforeseen changes in national media, CAKE must now change its upcoming single from 'Comfort Eagle' to 'Love You Madly.' We apologize to those of you who voted for the latter, but due to its airplane, corporate, and Middle Eastern references, 'Comfort Eagle' has been deemed inappropriate for today's emotional climate.

Meanwhile, Rick James...
Disempowered
The scattering flock
Dances in a fever
At the Castle Rock

Dust devils cypress
Ripening fruit
Ascending quick
Into the authors bathroom

Fon, Jo and Tootsie
Are out on a wire
Less tooth junkies
All full of desire

Meanwhile Rick James takes her nude
And there's nothing I can do
Meanwhile Rick James takes her nude
And there's nothing I can do
And there's nothing I can say to you

I've got a lot of work to do
I guess I'll leave it up to you

Uninvited
We'll stay if we want
Searching through your closets
For your grandfathers gun

We were swimming your kidney,
Kidney shaped pool
Scratching at the bottom
For another clue, yeah

Fon, Jo and Tootsie
Are out on a wire
Less tooth junkies
All full of desire

Meanwhile Rick James takes her nude
And there's nothing I can do
Meanwhile Rick James takes her nude
And there's nothing I can do
And there's nothing I can say to you
And there's nothing I can do
And there's nothing I can say to you
I've got a lot of work to do
I guess I'll leave it up to you

Long Line of Cars

There's a long line of cars, and they're trying to get through
There's no single explanation; there's no central destination
But this long line of cars is trying to get through
And this long line of cars is all because of you

We don't wonder where we're going or remember where we've been
We've got to keep this traffic flowing and accept a little sin
So this long line of cars will never have an end
And this long line of cars keeps coming around the bend

From the streets of Sacramento to the freeways of L.A.
We've gotta keep this fire burning and accept a little gray
So this long line of cars is trying to break free
And this long line of cars is all because of me

There's a long line of cars
Long, long, long line of cars
Long, long, long line of cars
Long, long, long line of cars
