First They Took The Oil - Then They Came For The Wind

The oil was the first Scottish gold rush, the second will surely be our renewables.

Introducing EGL 2, our all new electric super highway which will run from Peterhead in Aberdeenshire to Drax in North Yorkshire.

The 311 mile undersea cable will be operational by 2029 and will bear loads of 2GW of green energy, powering up 2 million homes south of the border.

This £3.4bn project will be the first of 2 projects being laid, with the second, EGL 1, connecting Torness in East Lothian with Seaham in County Durham shortly there after.

EGL 1 & 2, together, will be capable of powering up to 7.5 million homes.

As if that isn't enough, these two initial projects are expected to be followed by two FURTHER connections between Peterhead and Lincolnshire and then another between Kinghorn in Fife and Norfolk - and will work alongside the Western Green Link which already runs between Hunterston in Ayrshire and the Flintshire Bridge on the English/Welsh border.

Opened in 2017, the Western Green Link cable has already transmitted more than 23,000 GWh of green energy with a wholesale value around £2.3 billion in its first five years.

Although the links are bi-directional, it's widely accepted that Scotland is a net-exporter of electricity so more will be leaving than coming in.

And despite wholesale electricity prices fluctuating, you can guess at how much those "exports" WOULD'VE been worth to the Scottish economy.
