The El Paso Police Department released body-cam footage from a deadly SWAT standoff that happened in April in west El Paso.
On Friday, EPPD released a video that collects several body-cam videos showing short but intense moments from the hours-long SWAT standoff that ended in an officer-involved shooting that took the life of 27-year-old Martin Herrera-Garces on April 11.
The incident happened at an apartment complex located at 300 Skyview St., near Coronado High School.
According to police, it all started when Herrera-Garces reportedly fired several shots from an upstairs apartment balcony.
After EPPD spokesperson Officer Adrian Cisneros explains what body cameras are and how officers use them, the video then shows a snippet from the 911 call police received that evening, at around 6:30 p.m.
At this point, you can hear the caller describe how they heard 10 gunshots just a couple of minutes before.
The video then shows how a patrol unit responding to the call gets hit by gunfire. As the officer turns the wheel on the corner of Skyview Street and Pamlico Drive, you hear the shooting and then see the officer frantically jump out of his unit and run for cover from both the point of view of his body-worn camera and from his unit's dashboard camera.
The EPPD spokesperson then narrates that by this point in the video, suspect Herrera-Garces barricaded himself in an apartment, leading to an hours-long SWAT standoff.
The video then shows body-cam footage from later in the night.
The narrator describes that at this point, Herrera-Garces finally stepped out armed with a firearm, triggering a shootout.
In this new angle-- from the vantage point of an officer standing by his patrol unit with his firearm ready and aimed at the apartment complex-- you can see what appears to be a bullet striking the unit-- inches away from the officer's weapon.
Then, you can hear a barrage of gunfire and the images go dark as the officer wearing the body cam ducks for cover, car alarms blaring in the background as a result of the loud exchange of gunfire.
Officers yell at each other,
You're good? You're good? Everybody good?!
Before more gunfire rings out.
The video then cuts to yet another officer's perspective.
In this angle, during that barrage of gunfire, this officer appears to fire in response before we hear police announce,
He's down! He's down!
Toward the end, the video then shows SWAT officers approaching and handcuffing Herrera-Garces who appears to be injured and lying face down on the ground.
