Power Consolidated: Erdogan's Türkiye in an Autocratic Shift

Peace Through Strength podcast host Joy Votrobek and ASCF senior analyst Laurence Sanford discuss Recep Tayyip Erdogan's aspirations to revive the Ottoman Empire and a caliphate. This revivalist sentiment is reflected in Erdogan's foreign policy, which seeks to expand Türkiye's influence in the Middle East and North Africa. Erdogan's approach could risk alienating neighboring countries and igniting nationalist tensions. He also continues to attack the Kurds in Syria with no mention of a Kurdish state. Erdogan's vision appears to move Turkey (now Türkiye) to an autocratic Muslim society and away from the modern society Ataturk created.

The American Security Council Foundation was founded in 1958 to fight Communism in the United States. The ASCF successfully started a Peace Through Strength Coalition and had the bipartisan support of over 200 members of Congress through the Cold War Era. One of those members was President Ronald Reagan. Reagan would thank the ASCF for its work on a "Peace Through Strength" strategy. The ASCF is an educational, nonpartisan, non-profit 501(c)(3).
