The New 'Red Scare' w/ Victor Grossman

In 1952, while serving in the U.S. military in Austria, Victor Grossman swam across the Danube River and defected to East Germany.

Before serving in the U.S. military, and while he was studying at Harvard University, Grossman had joined the U.S. Communist Party. As McCarthyism swept across the United States, Grossman feared that he would be prosecuted by U.S. authorities because, at the time he joined the U.S. military, he had not disclosed his membership in left-wing groups.

After defecting, Grossman studied journalism in East Germany and remained there, working as a journalist and writer. He still lives in Germany today.

On October 31, 2024, Dimitri Lascaris spoke to Grossman about the era of McCarthyism, life in the Soviet Bloc and the upcoming U.S. election. According to Grossman, there's a new 'Red Scare' sweeping across the West. Grossman sees many similarities between the era of McCarthyism and the attitudes of Western governments today.
