Florida is always the butt of jokes. And as someone who grew up in Florida, the jokes are mostly accurate. It’s definitely the weirdest state. All that to say, it’s not shocking to see HBO come up with a late-night comedy series based on the antics of Floridians, titled “It’s Florida, Man.”

Here’s the synopsis:

From Rough House Pictures (HBO’s “Eastbound & Down” and “The Righteous Gemstones”) and Range Studios, this irreverent late-night comedy series brings to life unbelievable ripped-from-the-headlines tales of the Sunshine State – straight from the people who live there. Featuring interviews from everyday Floridians and playful recreations starring a rotating cast of actors and comedians, including Anna Faris, Jake Johnson, Randall Park, Juliette Lewis, Sam Richardson, Ego Nwodim, and more, this hilarious and outrageous series sheds light on the viral, wacky, and weird. Covering diverse topics – from mermaids to witches, extreme fantasies, and feral bunnies with equal parts humor and heart, IT’S FLORIDA, MAN. is a love letter to the beaches, backwaters, and especially the people of a misunderstood yet magical state.
It’s Florida, Man is a new HBO series with all the appeal of Drunk History’s real stories turned ragtag educational videos by famous people, and all the charm of having pride in one’s (objectively bizarre and undignified) home state as presented in How To With John Wilson. Now, instead of major historical events, the six-part series uses popular actors to re-enact firsthand accounts of harrowing experiences from residents of Florida, a state that has become popular for its unusually large number of viral stories.

What Is ‘It’s Florida, Man’ About?

Let’s face it: Florida was built for entertainment – Apple TV+’s dark comedy crime drama Bad Monkey, Netflix’s dark comedy crime drama Florida Man, indie drama film The Florida Project. The Sunshine State has gained a reputation for housing some of America’s most unbelievable and disturbing stranger-than-fiction stories. Each half-hour segment of It’s Florida, Man is a side-by-side interview and dramatization of a personal Floridian tale performed by familiar actors including Sam Richardson, Randall Park, Ego Nwodim, Anna Faris, Juliette Lewis, and Jake Johnson. The first episode, aptly entitled “Toes,” follows Sam Richardson as an avid concert-goer opening his mind to more eccentric opportunities for quick cash. In the second episode, actor Simon Rex portrays a man who survives the Floridian wilderness having just lost an arm to an alligator. You may be familiar with the one that goes a little something like, “Florida Man Robs Wendy’s With Alligator,” which was hilariously reimagined by comedian Shayne Smith. Employing the cream of the crop of Florida’s wildest headlines basically makes the series a mild thriller anthology.

Not ‘Drunk History’, Just Sober Florida

Just as in Drunk History, popular actors and comedians perform similarly comedic re-enactments of the Florida headlines. A major difference between It’s Florida, Man and Drunk History is that the actors speak lines of dialogue from the interview instead of directly lipsyncing the slurred speech of the person telling the story, as the storytellers are now (most likely) sober. But the show’s true-story element still keeps each story captivating. The interviewees have the chance to describe their thought process through the wild and highly judgeable choices, so, despite capitalizing on Florida's wackyness, the interview/documentary aspect of the series does sustain a layer of humanization by the storytellers.

How Does the Series Get Its Name?

“Florida Man” used to be a term only meant to describe unthinkably outlandish people engaging in equally unthinkable and outlandish acts. But the term has come to lose its value as America has watched Florida continue to pump out a consistent stream of indescribably wild news. The headlines are almost always objectively atrocious, but we’ve built up a tolerance. What’s that? Someone broke into a jail just to hang out with his friends? Probably Florida. Say again? A woman called for the establishment of a Sugar Daddy Appreciation Day at a board meeting? Oh, Florida, you rascal.

Previously home to other low-budget comedy series like A Black Lady Sketch Show and Los Espookys, It’s Florida, Man is the new talk of Friday nights on HBO. It’s Florida, Man, co-created by Mark Herwick and Jeff Tomsic with executive producer Danny McBride, harbors all the strangeness you rightfully expect of the state, including amputation fetishes, mermaids and witches, and DIY arson. If you happen to have a Drunk History-sized hole in your heart, HBO's It's Florida, Man is the perfect series to fill it.

It’s Florida, Man is available to stream on Max in the U.S. New episodes premiere on Fridays.

It's Florida, Man is here to make you rethink the meme that simultaneously celebrates and denigrates a particular brand of American eccentric. From the producers of The Righteous Gemstones, this new HBO Original plays like Drunk History meets The Jinx, walking a fine line between enlightened empathy and smirking exploitation.

For those unfamiliar, the title of "Florida Man" comes from the headlines of shocking news stories out of the Sunshine State, specifically those that succinctly paint a ludicrous picture of debauchery, destruction, or embarrassment. From this, the Florida Man meme rose to prominence on social media, sharing snippets of outrageous stories for easy laughs, carelessly turning perpetrators and victims alike into punchlines.

Created by Mark Herwick and Jeff Tomsic, It's Florida, Man offers those who survived their brushes with being the butt end of the meme to speak for themselves. Bringing buoyancy and a bit of star power to the show's dedicatedly humorous re-enactments is a cavalcade of guest stars that includes Anna Faris, Randall Park, Jake Johnson, Juliette Lewis, Simon Rex, Ego Nwodim, and Sam Richardson.

From episode to episode, the tone can shift radically, as the team behind It's Florida, Man seems uneasy in turning everything into comedy fodder. But overall, there's something undeniably charming about these Florida men and women who refuse to be defined by internet snark and 15 minutes of infamy.

Before each of six episodes, an opening narration from King of the Hill alum and native Floridian Stephen Root promises the following:

"What you're about to see may be dangerous, petty, misguided, but most definitely stupid. But it's also all true. Sort of."

The first four episodes released to critics involve a saucy plan for vengeance, a feud between a professional mermaid and a practicing witch, an alligator-attacked optimist, and a pair of friends who take on a terrifyingly toe-curling Craigslist ad. In each of these instances, It's Florida, Man sits down with the subjects, allowing them to tell these stories in their own words. Some of these words will be repeated by the comedic performers, bringing a broad humor to the re-enactments. But some lines are best from the source.

For instance, in episode two, "Gator," self-proclaimed Florida Man Eric Merda declares of the dubious distinction, "I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I'll stab you with the sharpest tool!"

It's Florida, Man proudly showcases a rough-edged charm.

Of the first four episodes, "Gator" is the most compelling. Simon Rex stars as Eric Merda, whose brush with an alligator left him with one arm. Leaning into the same crooked comedic sensibility of the critically acclaimed dramedy Red Rocket, Rex is radiant with a sunburned vulnerability. Whether gathering trash on the side of the road or swimming peacefully in a gator-infested lake, Rex carries with him a jubilance that is not only appealing but also reflects the energy of Merda in his interviews.

This Florida Man tells the documentarians that many see his story as a tragedy, but he sees it as a new beginning. "Gator" portrays that version convincingly through Merda's lens. In this way, It's Florida, Man evangelizes for the fantastic freedom of letting go of other people's perceptions of you. Who cares what social media or an interviewed psychic might say about the spiritual vision Merda swears he encountered in the swamp? As goofy as this story begins, Merda's moxie and message of personal renewal are inspiring.

Merda's the first to admit he was a "piece of shit" who made a wildly foolish mistake that got him grievously injured. But he's happy with where he ended up, so he appreciates the whole of the experience, limb loss and all! This joyous portrait complicates the idea of a Florida Man, which seems to be the purpose of this curious series. People who have been written off by the internet as rednecks or worse are given a chance to share not only their internal logic behind these questionable decisions, but also their personality, their humor, and their humanity.

However, not every episode is so successful.

"Mermaids" is a low point in It's Florida, Man.

In the trailer, "Mermaids" seems absolutely delightful, featuring Anna Farris and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Mary Elizabeth Ellis as warring professional mermaids in a kitschy battle that would be well-suited to a Kristen Wiig movie. However, gruff words poolside lead swiftly to unemployment, online harassment, and ultimately police corruption being exposed.

While "Toes" and "Saucy" involve more violent incidents, "Mermaids" veers the most into true crime drama, specifically recalling the tense docuseries Fear Thy Neighbor (also on Max). Sure, mermaid costumes involving shimmery, rubber fish tails and naked witchcraft rituals make for flashy headlines. But within this show, that’s not enough to make this story funny, especially when the suffering is ongoing.

At one point, harassed mermaid Whitney Fair (whose story is at the heart of this episode) breaks down into tears recounting the events. The documentarians let the camera run as a crew member comforts her through this rough moment on camera. Moments like this are common in straight-faced true crime documentaries. Such shots reveal the raw pain that lies beneath a practiced brave face — the kind that victims are socialized to wear when recalling the worst day of their life for an audience that's a little too eager to witness it. The same is true in It's Florida, Man.

Fair's guard is dropped, and we can see the emotional strain this feud has had beyond the headlines. With that, it’s much harder to laugh at the re-enactments, no matter how gleefully kitschy Ferris and Ellis are in their roles. As such, this episode doesn't bolster Fair's perspective; it seems to mock her, undercutting the show's overarching empathy and revealing us as the detail-hungry audience members we truly are.

It's Florida, Man is downright addictive.

There is certainly an element of parody to the comic portrayals, which use the interview subjects as a launching pad for physical comedy, goofy mugging, and kooky quips. But as is the case with The Righteous Gemstones or the work of the Coen Bros' country crime comedies, there’s also a joyous appreciation for this wonky American outlaw.

They may be petty, reckless, and even stupid, but there is a reason they fascinate us. Perhaps you read a Florida Man headline and chuckle. But don’t you also wonder what led to that moment? Incredibly, hearing the full story doesn’t make these tall tales any smaller. It personalizes them, urging us to see their subjects as people are not punchlines. You’ll likely be giggling, guffawing, and repeating in shock some of the witticisms or rejoinders that these interviewees share with incredible generosity of spirit. But you also walk away with a deeper respect for the people who had a really wild time and came through the other side — perhaps not unscathed but still unapologetically themselves.

It's Florida, Man debuts on HBO Oct. 18 11:00 ET, and will also be available to stream on Max. New episodes air weekly.

UPDATE: Oct. 16, 2024, 3:30 p.m. EDT This review has been amended to note Jeff Tomsic is a co-creator of It's Florida, Man.

Topics HBO Streaming
We’re in the final seconds of an episode of the HBO reality/drama combo series “It’s Florida, Man” when an interview subject who has spilled the startling and embarrassing details of a bizarre chapter in his life seems to have a revelation and says, “What if one day, I’m like, trying to get a job, and they’re like, ‘Aren’t you that ... guy?’”

Comes the off-camera reply: “You’re only thinking about this NOW?”

And there’s the crux of it. If the filmmakers know their subjects might not be the most reliable judges of what’s best for themselves, if the viewer gets the sense these folks might not have a particularly strong sense of emotional and intellectual maturity, is it entertainment or exploitation — or both? Is it possible to find humor in their exploits even as we think maybe they should be getting professional help?

There’s no denying the “Cops” meets “Florida Man” meme meets “Drunk History” watchability of a series that chronicles the bizarre adventures of various Floridians, utilizing interviews with the real-life subjects along with re-creations featuring comedic performances from Anna Faris, Randall Park, Sam Richardson and Ego Nwodim, among others. As the press materials put it, the series is “a love letter to the beaches, backwaters and people of a misunderstood yet magical state.”

Sincere and affectionate intentions noted. Still, even as I was admittedly intrigued by these stories and I appreciated the funny performances by the comedy pros, I found myself wondering if the real-life subjects would have been better off staying out of the spotlight.

Another episode of “It’s Florida, Man.” stars Randall Park as a karate instructor who hires stranger to do something unusual with his toes.HBO
In the premiere episode, titled “Toes,” we meet Phil, who recounts the time when he needed $4,000 in cash so he could travel to Colorado to see his idol, the DJ known as Bassnectar. Phil goes on Craigslist and says he’s willing to do anything within reason for the cash — and he hears from a guy named Steve, who says, “I want you to cut off three of my toes, cook them, eat them, and I want to watch.”

In the re-creation of the incident, Sam Richardson plays Phil, Randall Park is Steve and Ego Nwodim is Phil’s friend Carol, who accompanies Phil to Steve’s house, where Steve is waiting with a whole setup, complete with kitchen knives. “We are in no way medical professionals,” Carol reminds us.

Spoiler alert: Steve backs out at the last minute. He needs all of his toes because he’s a karate instructor. The friendship between Phil and Carol blossoms into romance; as Phil puts it, “We’re two peas in a pod.”

Another episode features a guy named Eric, who is clearly not all there as he talks about the time he went swimming at night in gator-infested waters and had his arm bitten off, yet miraculously survived. Notes Eric: “If you never wake, you can never have a dream. But if you die, you’re never going to have a nightmare. You gotta live that nightmare to get through it, to have a dream. If any of that at all makes sense to anybody, you’re twice as crazy as I am.”

Faris shows up in another episode playing a “mermaid,” i.e., an aquatic performer, named Whitney, who found herself targeted by a rival mermaid who is also a witch. That other mermaid and her husband, a Broward County sheriff’s lieutenant, moved in next door and allegedly engaged in harassment. Says real-life Whitney: “I’m an underwater performer. I’m getting bullied by a cop and a witch.” (Amazingly, this is the lightest and least troubling episode I watched.)

An episode titled “Saucy” features a courtship gone wrong between a man named Denver (played by Jon Gries in the re-creation), and a younger man called Derrick (played by Echo Kellum), who seeks revenge on Denver by breaking into his trailer and attempting to start a fire by using a boiling pot of pasta sauce. “I [was] going to burn his trailer down and send him back to Kentucky!” declares real-life Derrick. Before it’s all over, Derrick is arrested while wearing a bull costume onesie. This makes for an irresistible news kicker, but getting to know the principals in the story actually makes it less amusing and just ... sad.

Some of this material plays like true-story versions of the situations and characters famed Florida novelist Carl Hiaasen (“Strip Tease,” “Bad Monkey”) puts in his books. Maybe it would have worked better if we just saw Faris, Richardson, et al, in the fictionalized versions of events. Seeing the actual people, who often seem to be lost and overwhelmed by life, makes it more depressing than a comedy series should be.
