Between September 27, 2020, and September 21, 2021, five-year-old Elijah Lewis suffered horrific abuse, neglect, and isolation. His remains were discovered later that month buried in a Massachusetts state park, weighing only 19 pounds. An autopsy revealed that Elijah died from violence and neglect, with injuries including malnutrition, facial and scalp trauma, and pressure ulcers as well as fentanyl.
His mother, Danielle Dauphinais, 38, faced a potential sentence of 55 years to life for her role in Elijah’s death. The defense is recommending 35 years to life, citing her own childhood abuse as a mitigating factor. In court, she expressed remorse, stating, “Even so, Elijah never deserved any of the abuse. Parents are supposed to take care of their child.”
Prosecutors detailed the months of torture Elijah endured, including being isolated in a room, deprived of food, and subjected to physical abuse. Disturbing text messages exchanged between Danielle and her BOYFRIEND revealed their hostility towards Elijah, with one message stating, “I’m going to kill him, and I mean it,” and another referring to him as a “maggot.”
This tragic case highlights the urgent need for awareness around child abuse and the protection of vulnerable children.
