The Red-backed Shrike is a rather impressive little bird that you might spot in parts of Europe during summer months. The male is quite the looker, with a grey head, reddish-brown back, and a distinctive black mask across his eyes – rather like a bandit! Females are more subtle, wearing browns and greys instead. These birds are about the size of a large sparrow, but don't let their small size fool you – they're actually quite fierce hunters.
What makes them really interesting is their hunting style. They're known as "butcher birds" because they have this clever habit of catching insects, small birds, and even mice, then storing them by sticking them on thorns or barbed wire – like a natural larder! While they used to be common in Britain, nowadays you'll be quite lucky to spot one here as they're quite rare visitors. They prefer open areas with scattered bushes and thorny hedges, where they can perch up high and keep an eye out for their next meal.
