Long Beach police released body cam footage Monday showing an officer open fire on a homeless man believed to be armed with a handgun at a Metro station earlier this year.

Police were dispatched to the Metro Rail platform at West 5th Street and Pacific Avenue on Aug. 7 after receiving multiple calls of a man brandishing a firearm on the platform.

Body cam footage of the incident released Monday shows police chasing the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Tyrell Harris, and at one point yelling, “Freeze. On the ground, now.”

A gunshot is then heard as the suspect appears to be taking something out of his waistband or pocket.

Harris, who police said was experiencing homelessness, was struck by the gunshot and taken to a local hospital to be treated for the wound to his upper body before he was booked at Long Beach City Jail.

He was later charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and three counts of criminal threats, the Long Beach Post reported.

The weapon, which was retrieved on the day of the incident, was determined to be an operable BB pistol with a CO2 cartridge and BBs, police said.
