Pre-production
It was announced in January 2020 that James Mangold would be writing and directing a biopic about Bob Dylan, specifically centered on the controversy surrounding his switch to electric guitars, with Timothée Chalamet cast as Dylan. At this time, the film was referred to as Going Electric.[7] By October, cinematographer Phedon Papamichael stated that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic had put the project into doubt.[8] Chalamet regardless spent time researching Dylan during the pandemic, visiting former homes of Dylan in New York City and consulting director Joel Coen during this time.[9][10] Mangold had also met with Dylan about the film, and stated that he annotated the script while also providing notes to Chalamet.[11] In an October 2023 interview, Chalamet stated he was working with the same team of vocal and movement coaches that worked with Austin Butler for his performance in Elvis (2022).[12]

In November 2022, Chalamet stated he was still attached to the film and actively preparing for it, the project having gained momentum again after stalling.[13] In February 2023, the film was officially titled A Complete Unknown, and it was stated that Mangold would begin work on the project following his obligations to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.[14] Monica Barbaro would enter final negotiations to portray Joan Baez in April.[15] In May, Elle Fanning was cast to play Sylvie Russo,[16] a character based on Suze Rotolo,[17] with Mangold announcing Benedict Cumberbatch would be portraying Pete Seeger in the film.[18] Barbaro would also be confirmed for her role, beginning singing and guitar lessons to prepare.[19] Mangold would state in July that the film was not necessarily focused on being a Dylan biopic, but an ensemble drama in the vein of Robert Altman. Boyd Holbrook and Nick Offerman would also join the cast in that time.[11] In October, P.J. Byrne was noted as being amongst the cast.[20] In January 2024, Edward Norton was revealed to portray the role of Seeger, replacing Cumberbatch who left due to scheduling issues.[21] Additional casting was announced in March.[1]

Filming
In April 2023, Mangold stated that principal photography would likely begin in August 2023 in New York City and Montreal,[22] but filming was postponed in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[23] By early 2024, filming was scheduled to begin in late March 2024, and was expected to occur throughout New Jersey, with scenes set in New York City being filmed in Jersey City.[24][25] Filming eventually began on March 16.[26] Production wrapped by late June 2024.[27][17][28]

Release
In July 2024, a teaser trailer was released.[29][30] The official trailer was released in October.[31] The film will premiere in the United States on December 25, 2024.[32]

Timothée Chalamet transforms into Bob Dylan for the music biopic of the year.

James Mangold directs Chalamet in the long-gestating “A Complete Unknown,” which captures folk singer Dylan’s rise from his late teen guitar-playing years to performing at the iconic Newport Folk Festival in 1965. “Walk the Line” helmer Mangold adapted the screenplay from Elijah Wald’s book “Dylan Goes Electric!,” which was released in 2015.

The official synopsis reads: “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s, ‘A Complete Unknown’ follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s (Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts — his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation — culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.”

The cast also includes Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie.

Writer/director Mangold told Rolling Stone that the film is truly a “strong ensemble piece” centered around Chalamet’s Dylan.

“I’m much more interested in the wake that this person has left on others, as much as I’m interested in unpacking who he is in some kind of conventional movie-Freudian way,” Mangold said. “One of the things that is truly hard to define and certainly I think hard to define on film — and one of the great questions of life — is what is talent and how is someone born special. And instead of me trying to answer that question, which I truly believe is unanswerable, [instead ask] how does it affect us and our feelings about existence, our own validity? Jealousy, worship, idolatry, obsession, love, all these things can be the result of this kind of superpower that a character can have.”

Mangold continued that Chalamet emphasized the “burden” of talent that Dylan carries. “Where Timmy also does something really quite profound is to show you his almost genetically predisposed discomfort with what his own great achievements then bring upon him and that, in terms of people wanting things, transactional relationships, or relationships that are tainted by the immense power and talent,” Mangold said.

Chalamet also gives live performances as Dylan in the film, showing his real-life singing chops as he displayed in “Wonka.”

“If Timmy’s brave enough to stand out there and make himself vulnerable, throwing himself at this, I should be brave enough to stand behind the camera and shoot,” Mangold said. “And Timmy was a partner in this. He very much wanted to.”

“A Complete Unknown” premieres December 25 in theaters from Searchlight. Check out the trailer below.

Trailers
In the latest trailer for A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet performs as Bob Dylan. The film, directed by James Mangold, follows Dylan’s early career and rise to stardom in the 1960s. Chalamet sings two classic Dylan songs in the trailer. The movie hits theaters in December 2024.

Trailer
In the trailer for A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet plays Bob Dylan. The film focuses on Dylan’s early years in New York City. It shows his journey from Minnesota to the West Village. During this time, Dylan began his rise to international fame.

In the trailer, Chalamet performs two of Bob Dylan’s songs. He sings "Girl From The North Country" and "Like A Rolling Stone." The film aims to capture the spirit of Dylan’s music. Chalamet’s portrayal of Dylan includes his voice and mannerisms.

Plot
The movie explores Dylan's relationships with key figures in his life. It highlights his early romance with Suze Rotolo, renamed Sylvie Russo for the film. Elle Fanning plays this role. The movie also includes Dylan’s interactions with Joan Baez. Monica Barbaro portrays Baez.
Timothée Chalamet showed off more of his singing chops in the new trailer for “A Complete Unknown,” James Mangold’s bio-drama about Bob Dylan.

The new footage shows Chalamet singing “Girl From the North Country” as he arrives in New York from Minnesota. He begins to cozy up to fellow folk singer Joan Baez (played by Monica Barbaro) as the two spark a romance.

“Your songs are like an oil painting at the dentist’s office,” he tells her, clutching a guitar while shirtless in bed. At the kitchen sink, Baez responds, “You’re kind of an asshole, Bob.”

The trailer also features footage of Dylan and Baez duetting at the 1963 Monterey Folk Festival. A love triangle brews as Elle Fanning arrives as Sylvie Russo, a fictionalized version of Dylan’s then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo, who appears on the album cover of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.”

As Dylan becomes more frustrated with being pigeonholed as the voice behind “Blowin’ in the Wind,” he changes everything by strapping on an electric guitar with “Like a Rolling Stone.” Brawls break out as half of Dylan’s fans marvel at the new direction and half view him as a traitor to folk music.

Popular on Variety
Following a barrage of paparazzi photos that leaked out of the set in the spring, Searchlight Pictures released the first trailer for the film, in which Chalamet sings a rendition of Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” in late July.

Speaking to Variety, a dozen Bob Dylan experts expressed cautious optimism toward “A Complete Unknown,” praising Chalamet’s performance of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.” “Does he nail the voice? God, you could be picky about it. But he does it seriously well. He gets across the passion and the soul in Bob Dylan’s voice without making it sound like karaoke,” said KG Miles, author of “Bob Dylan in the Big Apple,” “Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas” and other books.

“A Complete Unknown” is written by Mangold and Jay Cocks, and based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book “Dylan Goes Electric!” The rest of the cast includes Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, P. J. Byrne as Harold Leventhal, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman and Will Harrison as Bob Neuwirth, among others.

“A Complete Unknown” is produced by Fred Berger, Alex Heineman, Peter Jaysen, Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer, Jeff Rosen, Chalamet and Mangold.

A Complete Unknown, Timothee Chalamet
Timothée Chalamet sings Dylan, and grumps just like him too in the new official trailer for James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown. Charting the West Village era of the great Dylan’s rise to international fame, the clip hits all the high points of the near-mythological story: The arrival from Minnesota, the early romance (Suze Rotolo in real life, here called Sylvie Russo and played by Elle Fanning), the flirtation with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), the run-in with Newport Folkies angered over his gone electric move.

And we get to hear some clips, with Chalamet doing a decent Dylan, at first on the gentle “Girl From The North Country” and then on the rollicking “Like A Rolling Stone.”

Trailer
The new trailer has been released for A Complete Unknown. The upcoming biopic stars Timothée Chalamet as the acclaimed musician Bob Dylan. The film chronicles Dylan's life as an up-and-coming singer trying to make it in New York. Directed by James Mangold, the biopic also features a supporting cast of Elle Fanning, Scoot McNairy, Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook, Monica Barbaro, James Austin, and Charlie Tahan.

Now, Searchlight has released the new trailer for A Complete Unknown. Check it out below:

The trailer begins by showing Dylan (Chalamet) arriving in New York from Minnesota as the tune of "Girl from the North Country" plays. As the young musician gets discovered, he connects with other artists, including Joan Baez, with whom he is seen singing in the previews. Dylan is also seen conversing about his fame with others, including Fanning's Sylvie Russo. As the trailer continues, Dylan adapts to his fame, which comes with an iconoclastic attitude towards the music industry.

What A Complete Unknown Trailer Means For The Movie
A Complete Unknown Will Cover Bob Dylan's Music Industry Tensions

The new trailer for A Complete Unknown reveals Dylan's attitude towards music, despite how belligerent it may be. He is unafraid to share his opinion, telling Baez, for example, that her "songs are like an oil painting at the dentist's office." The character also expresses not being "plain" and being "whatever it is they [the public and music industry] don't want [him] to be." This reflects on his evolving music, which ranged from folk and rock in the 1960s to country and gospel in the 1970s. This establishes that Dylan's friction with the music industry will be a primary tension in A Complete Unknown.

The trailer also hints at how Dylan's personal life, or lack thereof, will factor into his character. At one point, Sylvie points out that Bob never talks about his family. The musician coyly replies, "People make up their pasts, Sylvie. They remember what they want, they forget the rest." This creates an almost mysterious intrigue concerning Bob Dylan, as his family life is only briefly mentioned, so more details will likely be revealed about his background. This is pertinent as Dylan previously spoke about having a rebellious childhood, which he later shared was false.

Will A Complete Unknown Be Timothée Chalamet's Oscar Chance?
Chalamet Has A Lot Of Points In His Direction
Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan singing in A Complete Unknown
Watching the newest trailer for A Complete Unknown, I cannot help but think that Chalamet's Oscar chances have just gotten better. The scene with Sylvie seems like it could be a potential dramatic Oscar moment. But even in subtler scenes, the actor is tasked with mastering the mannerisms of a highly idiosyncratic celebrity. Chalamet also has to sing, which is a promising factor for his Oscar hopes. Therefore, I think Chalamet has a shot of at least being nominated for Best Actor at the next Oscars.

Chalamet was previously nominated for Best Actor for Call Me By Your Name.
