The Des Moines Police Department on Monday released officers' body camera footage that provides a look at the moments that led to a deadly shooting in September.

The Iowa attorney general's office found that Capt. Chad Steffen and senior police officers Jacob Boekhoff and Frankie Contreras were justified in shooting Joshua Green on Sept. 16.

It all unfolded near Easton Boulevard and Hubbell Avenue in the early morning hours of Sept. 16 when police say Green drove away from an attempted traffic stop.

He crashed soon after and refused the officers' commands to turn off his vehicle and surrender.

Green pulled a handgun on officers during a struggle on the scene and fired shots that struck officer Cade Moritz in the head and Boekhoff in the arm.

Three officers returned dozens of shots, killing Green.

In total, Green shot seven rounds. Officers fired 51 times.

"We shoot until that threat is over, and this situation right here is the best example of why you shoot until that threat is over. He fired 7 rounds, four of those came after we started to return fire," said DMPD Sgt. Paul Parizek

Moritz and Boekhoff were treated for their injuries at a local hospital and have since been released. Both remain on administrative assignment as they recover.

Parizek says the officer acted exactly how they should have.

"You look at how dynamic and how fast these things happen, and to see them perform with that courage, and with that professionalism we're very very proud of our people, and we're glad they're all still with us," he said.

Green was a convicted felon and, therefore, not allowed to have possession of a gun.

He was also arrested in 2021 for possession of a firearm — the same gun used in this shooting.
