The Battle of Ideas Festival is an annual event held in Church House, Westminster. It is over a weekend, but I was only able to go on Saturday 19th October. It is well worth attending, with around 9 different debates to choose from in each time slot.
This one was whether or not assisted dying should be on the NHS. The chairman was Gareth Sturdy, who very kindly let me record the debate although there was an official recording which will no doubt be much better than mine, and which can be found at the links below. The speakers were the Rev Canon Harper, Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, Kevin Yuill and Piers Benn.
It was a very interesting contrast to listen to this debate so close to the one on euthanasia at the Cambridge Union. I have to say, this one was head and shoulders above that one. I expect the difference in time allocated to each one, combined with the life experience of those participating in this debate goes a long way towards explaining that difference, but even so, it was a pleasure to listen to this and the people in the audience who contributed their thoughts, all done in a very measured and respectful manner.
