When you step up to speak—whether at a wedding, business meeting, or family gathering—the opening statement sets the tone. The first rule: know your audience. Adapt your language, cadence, pitch, and even your volume to match the room. I’m thinking about an upcoming event where I’ll have a mixed audience with a language barrier; slowing down, pausing, and allowing space will ensure everyone understands the message. You can have the perfect message, but if it doesn’t resonate with the audience, it won’t land. Make sure you know who you’re speaking to and adjust to meet them where they are.

Are you reading your audience to make your message hit?
