Following the game's underwhelming launch, rumors quickly surfaced that Ubisoft had disbanded the entire development team for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. French YouTube channel ORIGAMI reported sightings of Ubisoft Montpellier employees transferring boxes between floors, with insiders suggesting this was symbolic of the project's termination. This unannounced move comes just months after the game’s January release, implying Ubisoft may have lost confidence in the title almost immediately.

The development team, originally committed to post-launch support and additional DLC content for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, reportedly advocated for two DLCs to try and turn around Ubisoft's perception of the game. However, management remained unconvinced, deeming the project unsustainable based on low sales and disappointing player counts. Insiders claim Ubisoft’s leadership chose to reallocate resources to more potentially profitable franchises, including XDefiant and Rainbow Six titles, which are more aligned with the company’s shift toward Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) experiences and open-world adventures.

Ubisoft’s pivot away from single-player or platformer projects like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has left many questioning the future of classic franchises within the company. As resources and staff are redirected to Ubisoft’s emerging GaaS ventures, it appears The Lost Crown may serve as an unfortunate example of the company’s new priorities, marking a significant change in strategy—and a disappointing end for the dedicated team that fought to save the game’s legacy.
