Episode 2638: The Sacred Heart Devotion: A Call for Reparation, before Our Election
"The Sacred Heart Devotion: A Call to Love and Reparation, before Our Elections"
Opening Prayer:
"O Sacred Heart of Jesus, full of compassion, we come before You with humble hearts. Guide us to understand the depths of Your love, the beauty of reparation, and the path of sacrifice. Grant us the grace to love You with all our hearts, to honor Your Sacred Heart in humility, and to console it through penance and devotion. Lead us into Your Heart as we seek to learn and grow in holiness. Amen."
Introduction:
Welcome to today’s episode, where we’re diving deep into the profound devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotion that has been at the center of Catholic spirituality for centuries. With our National Election only a week away, its never more important to reach out to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for Help. And really mean it!
This devotion, revealed to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century, calls us not only to experience Christ's love but also to make reparation for the sins that wound His Sacred Heart. We'll explore why this devotion has endured, delve into its scriptural and theological foundations, and highlight the words of great saints like St. John Vianney, St. Therese of Lisieux, and St. Pope Pius X, whose commitment to the Sacred Heart renewed Catholic piety in his time.
To begin, let us recall the words of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, to whom Our Lord revealed the promises of His Sacred Heart. She tells us how He pleaded, “Behold this Heart which has so loved men… and which finds scarcely any return of love.” This devotion calls us to console the Heart of Christ by living out the principles of reparation, penance, and perseverance.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus, therefore, is not just a comforting image, but a profound call to transformation, inviting us to a life of deeper faith, love, and sacrificial giving.
The promises of the Sacred Heart, especially the grace of final perseverance for those who receive Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays, reveal the richness of this devotion. These promises were not merely personal to St. Margaret Mary but were intended for the Church at large. Among the promises given by Christ was this: “My all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in My disgrace nor without receiving their sacraments.”
This is a reminder of Christ's mercy in offering us a means of strengthening our souls. Many saints have found strength in this devotion, including St. Pope Pius X, who emphasized its importance in the spiritual life. Pius X, known as the Pope of the Eucharist, called Catholics to live with greater love and reverence for Christ, and he promoted the devotion to the Sacred Heart as a remedy for the sins of his time. He said, “In the Sacred Heart, every treasure of wisdom and knowledge is hidden; in that Divine Heart beats the heart of the Church.”
St. Pope Pius X also recognized the dangers posed by modernism, which downplays the need for reparation and repentance, tempting the faithful to turn away from true humility before God. For him, the Sacred Heart represented the antidote to indifference and relativism a timeless reminder of the sacrifice Christ made and the love He calls us to emulate.
As we look at the devotion to the Sacred Heart, we see that it emphasizes reparation as a genuine response to sin. Our Lord told St. Margaret Mary that His Heart suffers deeply from humanity's ingratitude and indifference, which wounds His Sacred Heart. This message isn’t solely for the individual but is intended to transform communities, calling us to a collective responsibility in making amends.
St. John Vianney, known as the Curé d’Ars, beautifully said, “The heart of Jesus is an abyss of love in which we must drown every heart that loves Him.” For St. John Vianney, devotion to the Sacred Heart wasn’t a symbolic gesture but a concrete call to sacrifice and reparation, drawing us to immerse ourselves in God’s love through acts of humility and penance. The faithful’s deep commitment to reparation illustrates a reciprocal love that consoles Christ's wounded Heart.
Additionally, this devotion stands as a response to the suppression of traditional expressions of faith, particularly the Latin Mass. The rich liturgical heritage of the Church, preserved in the Traditional Latin Mass, serves as an avenue for many Catholics to deepen their devotion to the Sacred Heart. St. Pope Pius X, whose pontificate defended both the Latin Mass and devotion to the Sacred Heart, encouraged the faithful to hold fast to these traditions that foster reverence, prayer, and penitence.
In a world that often focuses on the exterior or symbolic, the Sacred Heart devotion calls us inward, to the heart of the Gospel itself. It reminds us of the need for penance, not merely as an abstract concept but as an actionable love for God. This is a love that moves us to atone for sins and participate in the sufferings of Christ. As St. Therese of Lisieux put it, “You cannot be half a saint; you must be a whole saint or no saint at all.” This reflects the devotion’s call to a life that is wholly devoted, not diluted by modern reinterpretations or weakened by the avoidance of sacrificial love.
As we contemplate the Sacred Heart, we are called to view Christ’s love as inseparable from His justice, a justice that seeks not condemnation but transformation. St. Alphonsus Liguori said, “God wishes us to seek Him and to love Him with our whole heart, without keeping back any part of ourselves from Him.” This complete self-giving, without reserve, is at the heart of the Sacred Heart devotion, reminding us to approach God with a love that is both sacrificial and sincere.
Closing Thoughts:
The Sacred Heart devotion is a call to immerse ourselves in Christ’s love, an invitation to offer reparation for our sins, and an encouragement to remain steadfast in the faith. In the words of St. Pope Pius X, “The Heart of Christ must be a shelter for the Church.” May we all grow in this devotion, honoring Christ with penitent hearts and lives that seek to console Him.
