Metro police fatally shoots a dog who charged at them when arresting the owner

On Sunday, October 20, 2024, at approximately 12:50 PM, a Metropolitan Police Department 7th District officer involved officer 1 was dispatched to assist other 7th district officers for a check on the welfare of an individual in crisis in the 23100 Block of 25th Street Southeast.

DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services was also dispatched, and an ambulance arrived on the scene shortly after involved officer 1 arrived.

Involved officer 1 and other 7th district members spoke with the subject and the reporting person. While the officers and the reporting person attempted to verbally persuade the subject to be voluntarily transported by fire and EMS to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The subject's dog, a pit bull, was in a closed cage in the apartment. Attempts to have the subject voluntarily agreed to be transported failed, and it was determined the subject was to be involuntarily transported to the hospital.

When involved officer 1 affixed their handcuffs to the subject's right wrist, the subject tensed their body and began to resist efforts to bring their hands behind their back.

The suspect was handcuffed and taken into the building stairwell. As involved officer 1 was holding the subject, the dog got free from the cage and ran into the stairwell, around the subject, and towards involved officer 1.

Involved officer 1 released the subject, ran down the stairs, and exited the building.

The dog chased involved officer 1 and other MPD and fire and EMS personnel into the courtyard, at which time involved officer 1 drew their service pistol and discharged 1 round at the dog.

Involved officer 1 continued running with the dog chasing them. Involved officer 1 tripped, fell and discharged a service pistol at the dog 3 additional times. The dog was struck twice and fell near, involved officer 1.

The dog succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
