Israel had reportedly sent a message to Iran on Oct. 25 ahead of its airstrikes in retaliation for Tehran’s Oct. 1 missile barrage. The Israelis warned the Iranians not to respond, as per an Axios report citing three sources with knowledge of the matter.
The Israeli message was an attempt to limit the ongoing exchange of attacks and prevent a wider escalation, the sources said. The Israeli message was conveyed to the Iranians through several third parties, the sources told Axios. Israel also warned the Iranians not to respond to the attack and stressed that if Iran retaliates, Israel would conduct another more significant attack.
The Israelis are said to have passed the message to Iran via Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp, as per reports. Hours ahead of the attack, Veldkamp had confirmed speaking to his Iranian counterpart.
