The song peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot Black Singles chart and number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It has sold over one million copies in the United States and has been certified gold by the RIAA.

Surface was a three-piece R&B group from Atlanta, Georgia. They were formed in 1985 and disbanded in 1997. During their career, they released four studio albums and scored six top-ten hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
