After selling Zip2 in 1999 for $22 million, Elon Musk made headlines with his first big purchase: a McLaren F1 supercar.

At the time, it was one of the fastest and most exclusive cars in the world, with only 106 ever made.

Musk spent approximately $1 million on the vehicle. In a now-famous anecdote, Musk wrecked the car in 2000, while driving without insurance, but fortunately, neither he nor his passenger, Peter Thiel, were injured.
