4 bodies recovered, 2 injured after southwest Las Vegas house catches fire, collapses
Firefighters located the four missing people after a house fire Thursday morning in southwest Las Vegas.
Around 4:15 a.m., Clark County firefighters arrived at Langhorne Creek Street and discovered a three-story home with “fire venting from all windows on the second and third floors.”
According to CCFD, the first crew at the scene attempted to enter the second floor through the front door but were pushed out by the heat. Two crews were able to enter by cutting through a garage door on the first floor and attempted a search, but had to leave when the home began collapsing on them.
Firefighters say the roof, third floor, and second floor have all collapsed into the garage.
At 4:18 a.m., a second alarm was called and additional support was requested.
Firefighters then began working to contain the fire to avoid it spreading to other nearby homes. At 4:22 a.m., crews extinguished the fire outside the home and attempted another search through the collapsed building.
Two residents of the home were treated and sent to UMC Trauma after jumping from a third-floor window.
When firefighters first responded, they were not able to locate four additional residents.
At 6:03 p.m., Clark County said they located two adults and children.
Firefighters will remain at the scene to conduct an investigation and tackle any hot spots.
Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, Henderson Fire Department, and Nevada Task Force 1 are at the scene to assist CCFD.
Both homes on either side of the fire are still habitable, according to Steinbeck, but will remain evacuated until the investigation is completed.
FOX5‘s Molly McBride was at the scene watching first responders. She spoke to neighbors who say they can’t imagine the tragedy for the family.
“As a father it feels like, you dont want to be that father.. You don’t want to ever think of what they’re going through,” said neighbor Daniel Ceballos. “For me, I am just grateful my children woke up next to me and they’re at school right now.”
“It’s frightening because all these houses are so close together, it’s amazing that that house was the only one that caught on fire, the other ones immediately could have caught on fire as well,” neighbor Chris Zabriskie said.
Clark County Chief Steinbeck said crews were able to keep the fire from damaging nearby houses.
“The homes are close together, radiate heat was strong, it did break out the windows of one home next to it but the crews were able to keep it from extending damage to either home on either side,” he said.
The identities of the four found are pending and will be released once they are confirmed by the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
