In Chapter 1, we are introduced to Richard Papen, the narrator, who reflects on the murder of his friend, Edmund “Bunny” Corcoran. Richard recounts his transfer from a small college in California to Hampden College in Vermont, where he becomes fascinated by an exclusive group of eccentric students studying Greek under the enigmatic professor Julian Morrow. The group consists of Henry, Bunny, Charles, Camilla, and Francis, who are wealthy and secretive. Richard is drawn to their sophisticated world of intellect and mystery, but he hints early on that something terrible has happened, setting a dark tone for the novel.
