Comparing Elevations Using Absolute Value

In this video, we compare the elevations of a submarine at -120 meters below sea level and a mountain at 100 meters above sea level using absolute value. By calculating the absolute values, we find that | -120 | = 120 and | 100 | = 100, showing that the submarine is further from sea level. While -120 is less than 100, the absolute value reveals the submarine is deeper below sea level than the mountain is above. This lesson aligns with Common Core Standard 6.NS.C.7d, helping students distinguish between comparing absolute value and number order in real-world situations.
