The former WNBA Coach of the Year is reportedly considering a move to the Indiana Fever.
With the addition of star coach Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever enjoyed one of their best seasons in memory. Under the leadership of head coach Christy Sides, the Fever had one of the most memorable runs of the WNBA season.
The season began around 2016, when establishment legend Tamika Catchings was still playing.
However, Indiana University's promising run ended in the postseason with a Game 2 loss to the Connecticut Sun. Sides has another season under contract with the Fever, but her future as a head coach could be subject to an expected purge. According to Annie Costabile of the *Chicago Sun-Times*, coach Stephanie White, who led Indiana out of the playoffs that season, is reportedly considering a major career change that could lead to a return to Indiana.
White, who was named the 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year, is currently under contract with the Connecticut Sun through 2025. However, White is reportedly in negotiations with multiple teams after the 2024 season.
Options White is considering include staying in Connecticut with the Suns, moving to Indiana or joining the Chicago Sky, who recently parted ways with coach Teresa Weatherspoon. White has an advantage in Indiana.
She played for the Fever from 2000-2004 and then served as the team's head coach from 2015-2016. A return to Indiana would be a hometown return of sorts, but with Christy Sides still retaining her head coaching position, it remains unclear what White's job would be if she were to return to the Fever.
There are no indications at this time that the Fever wants to go in a different direction than Sides, but some fans have speculated that they might.
White's return to Indiana may be plausible, but it's almost certain that she could go elsewhere, as other WNBA teams also have openings. There are currently five coaching positions open in the WNBA, including the Chicago Sky, Washington Spiritualists, Los Angeles Sparkles, Dallas Wings, and Atlanta Dream.
Given her impressive credentials, White will likely be in demand for a head coaching position, and going to Indiana as an assistant coach may not be an appealing option for someone her size.
But White could still be interested in coaching the Fever, especially given the team's bright future.
The Fever has a young center that includes three All-Stars in Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell (who will be a free agent this offseason).
With that talent, Indiana could quickly become a strong contender, which could actually spur White to return to her former team.
Any team looking to acquire White would likely have to offer her a big contract.
The WNBA's highest-paid coaches, Nate Tibbetts of the Phoenix Mercury and Becky Hammon of the Las Vegas Aces, reportedly make seven-figure salaries.
Luring White away from Connecticut would likely impose a similar financial burden. During her time with the Connecticut Sun, White proved to be a very successful coach.
She led the Sun to a 55-25 overall record and consecutive second-round exits in two seasons.
Her success and experience as a coach make her one of the most popular applicants if a team is looking for a coaching position.
