Beloved grizzly momma bear struck, killed by car in national park

Grizzly bear 399, believed to be the oldest reproducing female in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, was killed by a car on Highway 26-89 near Jackson.

The 28-year-old bear, known for producing 18 cubs in eight litters, had a yearling cub with her, but the cub was not found or believed to be injured.

Grizzly 399 was a beloved symbol of the species, inspiring wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.

Vehicle collisions have killed 49 grizzlies in the Greater Yellowstone area from 2009 to 2023, with two deaths in 2024, Cleveland.com has reported.
