In the early 1700s, women played a crucial role in shaping the British colonies, especially through their influence on education and religious instruction. Rooted in Puritan principles, colonial society placed a strong emphasis on literacy, largely driven by the belief that individuals should be able to read the Bible. This religious focus fostered the growth of female literacy, as women were encouraged to study the scriptures and teach these values within their households. Over time, this educational responsibility expanded beyond the home.

As women became more literate, some began teaching Bible studies in their communities, paving the way for a broader acceptance of women as educators. Puritan values, which held that all members of society had a duty to promote moral and religious instruction, supported the idea that women could contribute meaningfully to public life, particularly in schools. By the mid-1700s, this led to women becoming teachers in public schools, where they played a vital role in educating future generations. Their involvement in education not only strengthened the colonies’ religious and moral fabric but also laid the groundwork for greater opportunities for women in society.
