Though Graphene’s miraculous properties mean it would be useful in a host of applications, recent cost estimates (2023) put it anywhere between US$100 to US$400 per gram making it prohibitively expensive.

In January 2024 Researchers at Georgia Tech, in Atlanta, announced that they had developed what they are calling the world’s first functioning graphene-based semiconductor and they did it for a cost of around $20. This breakthrough holds the promise of overcoming the barrier to the number of transistors you can place on chips which would revolutionize the landscape of electronics, enabling faster, smaller traditional computers and offering a new material for future quantum computers.
